Arestin®, or minocycline, is an antibiotic that kills the bacteria that causes gum disease directly where they live – in the periodontal pocket below the gumline. It is not a pill that you take. Instead, it is a powder applied to affected pockets by a dentist or dental hygienist at the time of your cleaning. Its effects last up to 3 months. Arestin® stops and controls moderate deep pockets (up to 6mm). Therefore, it is proven therapy in preventing progression to advanced gum disease where deeper pockets may require surgical treatment. It is essential that your gums’ condition be closely monitored and evaluated every 3 months. Arestin® may be reapplied anytime the periodontal pocket is active.
Arestin® may be covered by your dental or medical insurance. When this is the case, Dr. Beauchamp will write a prescription and sent it to a “virtual†pharmacy through the internet. A pharmacy staff member will contact you by phone and ask you to pay the corresponding co-payment. The medication is sent to our office on your behalf. We will deliver the medication at the time of your cleaning, or during an additional appointment, if applicable.
